It took me a few years to find my footing in education. My first year I looked around and I saw myself surrounded by teachers who commanded the room. They perched themselves in the front of their classroom, pulling in their students' attention like a black hole. But that wasn't me. I tried, but I couldn't pull off that style. And it just didn't feel right. In time, I gave up trying to be someone I wasn't. I gave up trying to make my classroom look like the ones I saw on TV. Instead, I took a step back, pushed the spotlight off of me and onto the students. In doing so, I stumbled upon my educational philosophy.

Our education system rewards kids that are talented at "playing school." In doing so, we disenfranchise so many kids that otherwise could contribute mightily to our schools and our communities. I want to change that. To shift the focus of our classes from the teacher to the students. From compliance to engagement. From playing school to truly learning.

This is a philosophy I've developed over a decade in education. During that time, I've taught every core subject spread over middle and high school. I've served as an Instructional Resource Teacher, Technology Facilitator, and Testing Coordinator. I've developed curriculum for a local non profit as well as NCVPS. This practical experience equips me with the skills and knowledge to put in place my educational philosophy.
